The private art collection housed at the Rupert Museum was started by the Late Dr Anton Rupert and his wife Huberte in the 1940s and continued throughout their lives. The museum, with purpose-built design, was a vision shared by Mrs Huberte Rupert and architect Hannes Meiring who was commissioned in 2003. It opened in February 2005 and showcases selected acquisitions of South African and international artworks. On show are works by South African artists such as Cecil Skotnes, Irma Stern, Ernest Mancoba, JH Pierneef, Gregoire Boonzaier, Penny Siopis, Willie Bester, Lucas Sithole and William Kentridge, to name a few. There are also works by international artists the like of Auguste Rodin, Käthe Kollwitz and Antoine Bourdelle.
