Cape Town is a port city on South Africa's southwest coast on a peninsula beneath the imposing Table Mountain. As of 2014 it is the 10th most populous city in Africa and home to 64% of the Western Cape's population. It is the legislative capital of South Africa and the capital of the Western Cape Province. Originally populated by Khoi-San Groups, the first Europeans settled in 1652 with the Dutch East India Company (DEIC) establishing a supply station for ships sailing to East Africa and Asia. It remained under the control of the DEIC until 1795 when it became a British colony. After a short return to the Batavian Republic, the Cape Colony was retaken by the British in 1806 and remained in British hands until independence. In 1910 the Cape Colony was amalgamated with other British controlled areas in southern Africa to form the current territory of South Africa. It became a republic in 1961. The first fully democratic government came into power on 27 April 1994.

The City has a vibrant museum and cultural life. The city was named World Design Capital for 2014 by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design.

Cape Town is located within the Cape Floral Kingdom known for its fynbos. There are only six floral kingdoms in the world, and fynbos not only constitutes one kingdom (the smallest) all on its own, but is the only one occurring entirely within one country.

Fynbos has more diversity of species than a tropical rainforest. There are 9 000 species of fynbos occurring in the Cape area, and over 2 000 species on Table Mountain alone - which is more plant species than occur in the whole United Kingdom.
